Who can study at BistroLanguages?
We work with motivated learners from middle school through adulthood. Our programs serve middle and high school students, adult learners, professionals, and heritage speakers who want to build stronger literacy and communication skills in their language.
-
How much time should I plan to study each week?
Most students make good progress by studying 2–4 hours per week for each course. You can move faster or slower depending on your goals, but each module includes guidance on how long activities typically take so you can plan your time.
-
Can beginners start from zero?
Yes. Many of our self-paced courses include true beginner options. If you are not sure whether to start from zero or at a higher level, complete our short intake form and we will recommend the best starting point for you.
-
Which languages do you offer?
We currently offer Russian, Ukrainian, Portuguese, Georgian, and German, with the possibility of additional languages by request. If you have a specific language in mind, contact us to see what options are available.
-
How do I get started?
Begin by exploring our course catalog and completing a short form about your goals. We’ll recommend the best self-paced course or pathway and guide you through enrollment and payment so you’re ready to start your first module.
-
Is BistroLanguages accredited?
Yes. BistroLanguages is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Our curriculum follows the California World Languages Standards so that students can work toward recognized world language requirements.
-
Can students earn high school credit?
Our accredited, standards-aligned courses can support students who need high school world language credit. Each school or program has its own policies, so we recommend confirming with your counselor or administrator. We can provide syllabi and documentation to support that process.
-
Do you help with proficiency exams and the Seal of Biliteracy?
Yes. Many of our students prepare for AVANT, NEWL, and the Seal of Biliteracy. We integrate communication-focused practice and test-aware tasks into our courses and can also offer targeted preparation when needed.
-
How does the self-paced course platform work?
Each course is organized into modules with short video lessons, reading and listening activities, vocabulary and grammar practice, and interactive quizzes. You study on your own schedule, follow clear instructions inside each lesson, and can ask questions in the course discussion areas when you need help.
-
What technology do I need?
You’ll need a stable internet connection and a computer or tablet to watch lessons and complete activities. We recommend using headphones for better audio and fewer distractions; a microphone is helpful if you want to record speaking practice, but not required for following the course.
-
Is there any support while I study?
Yes. Even though courses are self-paced, you can ask questions in the course discussion areas, receive feedback on key assignments, and contact us if you need help choosing your next course or adjusting your study plan.
-
What time zones do you support?
Because our courses are self-paced, students can study from any time zone. You can log in, watch lessons, and complete activities whenever it works best for you; response times for questions and feedback are clearly stated inside each course.
-
How is my progress tracked in the course?
Your progress is tracked automatically as you complete lessons, quizzes, and assignments. Inside your course dashboard, you can see which modules are finished, which activities are in progress, and your scores on key quizzes and tasks.
-
What types of activities and quizzes will I complete?
Courses include short video explanations, reading and listening tasks, vocabulary and grammar practice, auto-graded quizzes, and occasional written or recorded speaking assignments. These activities are designed to help you use the language in real contexts, not just memorize rules.
-
How much do courses cost?
Tuition depends on the course type, format (group or one-to-one), and duration. Please see our course catalog for current pricing or contact us directly for a detailed quote and help choosing the best option.
-
Do you offer customized programs?
Yes. In addition to our main courses, we can discuss customized program options or schedules for groups of learners who have specific goals, time zones, or assessment needs.
